  1. your invention should be a car that runs on something other than gas/ethanol, both are actually pretty bad for the environment (ethanol is made out of corn, but the process is actually really un-environmentally friendly)

also motion-sensor lights (except they already exist)

something kind of like a doggy buzz collar that zaps people when they try to buy an suv

chargers that don't keep sucking energy after something is fully charged/the thing is unplugged (yeah it sucks energy even when you cell/whatever is unplugged)

i think the point of this competition is most likely for you to think up the ideas though, i bet you have a bunch that just aren't completely formulated yet. go knock em dead, you can do it

  2. What mostly hurts the environment is overconsumption/overproduction, a consequence of consumerism. We fill the dumps and deplete the resources.

What is environmentally friendly? A home-made dinner with neighbors. A long conversation with your family. Walking or biking to the local library. Contributing to wikipedia in a public-access computer. These things are fun, help you grow as a human being, and neither hurt others nor the environment.

As far as inventions go, I guess "built to last" would be the most environmentally friendly. You know, like the things of our parents/grandparents. No matter the price, it it lasts 20 or 30 years it´s probably much cheaper for the planet (so, in the long run, for all of us) than if you throw it away after 2 or 3 years, tops.

An invention I have seen recently: a rack for carrying bicycles in a bus. As a frequent biker, I can tell you it is of great help, e.g. if it rains in the morning but not in the evening (or vice versa), or for going uphill with the bus and downhill with the bike.
