What things has the USA repeated since the mid 1800s?

So I'm trying to write an essay for a college class and the whole point of it is what the USA has repeated since the mid-1800s, good or bad. This means what things have happened and then the ideas or structure been repeated. Whether the country learned from them or ignored them doesn't matter.

An example (though a crappy one) is Pearl Harbor. They knew, oil was involved (Japan bombed because the US cut off their oil supply), etc. Now look at 9/11. There is speculation that people had warnings (they could've ignored them because, like Pearl Harbor, it seemed too ludicrous that someone that "dumb" would be able to pull off something so big so the country didn't plan for it), it evolved into a war for oil...

What other examples? I hate using that one; I'd rather have other ones.

  1. Monroe Doctrine, first proposed by President monroe, it lacked any teeth. Teddy would take this up with his dealings in Latin America.  We threw Spain out of Cuba, created the nation of Panama out of Columbia etc.  Could be an interesting topic.  Cuban missile crisis as an extension of the idea.

  2. Depending on how specific you have to be and what your time frame is, you could mention integration.

After the Civil War, the south was, to a limited extent, integrated by force during Reconstruction.

Then Reconstruction ended and so did integration until the Civil Rights movement.

The University of South Carolina actually closed down temporarily so that it would not be forced to integrate after the CW.

  3. I would go with:

    winter

    spring

    summer

    fall

This would be my safe bet!

  4. elected the same two parties just to get the same bickering and then wonder why they can't get anything done.

  5. Good grief ..the race card again in the presidential politics.
