the higher the number the better. As long as they are 100% cotton then they will stay cooler throughout the summer. Stay away from poly-blends.

400 plus... the higher the better.   and buy cotton... it is coolest.

I'd say 350 is the absolute minimum.  Anything under that will be rough and uncomfortable.  Go with the highest thread count you can afford.  You may also want to check out the new bamboo blends - they're soft, breathable and have natural anti-fungal properties which is very nice if you live in a humid area or tend to sweat.
