I'd read a lot. Maybe ... Well.... Impossible to select.

Tossing a coin, I would say try works by Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Edgar Allan Poe and Charlotte Bronte.

you don't need to read the classics at all. Most "classics" will deal with social/political troubles at the time and since they are "classic" that time was a long time ago and not really relevant to today. So read them for enjoyment only not because you must
