What time do most American have dinner?

If I want to invite people over for dinner, is 6:30pm too early? We normally have dinner at 8pm.

No not too early if on a fridays or saturday, but later is usually better say 7 or 7:30.  8 could be too late.

I think that 6:30 would be a nice time to have dinner. If some of your guests typically eat earlier, then they'll have a snack before they arrive, that's all.

it can be anywhere from 4 to 10 depending on who you are. Generally if you are inviting someone over, 7 pm is a good time. That gives them enough time to get home from work and then relaxed enough to be ready to handle the after work traffic. 7 pm is what I have lalways known people to have dinner with guests.

If you are having company, an invite for 6:30 for appetizers and drinks would be appropriate for an 8:00 dinner

I think as people age they start eating earlier (I had a friend joke about her grandparents eating supper at 3pm by the time they were in their 70's). I eat between 5pm and 6pm, but I also get up at 4:30am and go to bed around 9pm, so if you know a little about the peoples work schedule, it might help you decide what time they would be comfortable eating dinner. On the weekend it really isn't an issue with most people.
