Someone is building houses on land next to me and we have been awake since 7am today with this. I didn't get to bed until 1.30 am as I was working last night. Is it legal for them to start this early and if not what can I do about it?

Also am I being unreasonable to be annoyed?

  1. i don't really get what your saying but if they start at 7:00am then your lazy i wake up at 6:15 to take a shower and go to school

  2. You'll need to contact your local council about noise from building works near you early in the morning.

Here in London where I live, we have very strict rules about such things, especially Sundays - no jack hammers until quite late in the day, I think not before noon-ish.

Why not get on their help-line right now and tell them all about your noise problem.  They will be only too pleased to help and will probably want to push hard to stop the noise near you and might even go for a prosecution where such is possible.

Good luck and no, cotton wool in the ears is not the solution.  Stopping the noise is the only way.

    Do it and good luck.

  3. In Australia on weekdays it's 7 am start.

  4. the time is 0700 hrs, which is ridiculous, as we supposedly now live in a 24 hour society why not let them work 24 hours thus getting the work done quicker and the inconvenience over with

  5. yes think it is 7am   It is considered a reasonable time to start.  majority of people are in bed  10.30 to 11 in evening.

  6. I know how you feel - my next door neighbour is putting an extension on top of her place and this has been going on for months - 7am starts, even on a Saturday.  Shocking isn´t it.  Sorry I can´t help with the legal side.... but I do feel for you.

  7. Different local municipalities have different regulations regarding work start times.  7 AM may be okay in your area, although, if it is a residential area, it might be later.  Your best bet is to check with your local village hall to see what time they are allowed to start.  You could try talking to the contractors next door, although I doubt you'll have much luck since they're just trying to earn a living and finish that house as soon as possible.  But you never know, they might be sympathetic and work out a compromise with you.

  8. dunno, but there is a biulding , biult next to our house last year and they use to start at 7am in weekdays.

  9. you have every reason to be annoyed and can report it.In Ireland there should be no noise before eight.what annoys me is the drunks and drugies going by at 4 and taxis blowing horns.                   Oiche mhaith

  10. ...most City's, Towns and Municipalities have different laws regarding "start-up" times for construction work etc.  Call your local Governmental Offices and ask for the Building Inspector and find out...  Or call the Police Department, "they" should know as well...

  11. the time is 7am and there isn't anything that can be done about it sadly. you'll just have to be patient i guess. or spend a few nights at a friends house to get away from the noise.

  12. they are not allowed to do this untill 9am weeday and 10 am on the weekends you can contact your local shire to be exact and the shire can confront the builders next door for you also, the shire will issue them with a notice and if they do not comply they will have to resume the job all together there are laws for every one builder or not

  13. UK it`s 7am until dusk.

  14. I think the legal time for building work and noise is 8am

  15. are you in UK, check with your local council if so.  where we are they are not supposed to start until 8.00am, but many break that rule, and i have complained to the council about it so many times. We have a hospital nearby and one joker fills up the tanker anywhere around 6.00am,  which is awful. Contact the council by phone and e mail, if you do that and have no joy try the police. Make sure they make a note of it and then tell the contractors what you have done, it might stop them.  We have had up to six types of building work going on and one is up to a year, digging, banging, and we are sick of it so can totally sympathise.

  16. Different councils have different rules. Its usually 7 or 7.30am including Saturday, but some London councils have a 8 am rule and 9 am on Saturday. You need to check on your local council web site.
