Most of the time, the UK is 5 hours ahead of Eastern time. Not all the time though, since the USA and UK have different daylight savings time dates.

So basically, when it is 5pm in the eastern US, it's 10pm in the UK.

I agree with lavalamp, in the eastern USA the time zone is Eastern Standard Time which is 5 hours earlier than Greenwich Mean Time.  In Britain at this time of year we add one hour daylight saving to get British Summer Time but in the USA they also add one hour Daylight Saving Time so are almost always 5 hours earlier than UK time
