I'm off to Bergamo in Italy and been told I need to catch the Bus 1 or 1a to get to città alta. Can anyone give me details or even better s tep by step guide of how to get to the città alta area by bus and funicular, where to buy tickets, expected costs and times. I've had a good look but everything is in Italian and quick confusingly laid out. Also any prices for alternatives like taxi's?

I will be arriving from the UK via Ryanair and landing on a weekday after 10:30pm at the airport closest to Bergamo. I am not sure how much longer after 10:30pm Buses will run for toward Bergamo and how often they come.

  1. The funicular (funicolare in Italian) just changed schedule September 30th. It starts running at 7:07 am and runs until 12:11 am Monday - Friday; 7:13 am until 12:59 am Saturday; 7:39 am until 12:11 am Sundays and Holidays. Tickets are available at a booth at the stations at the bottom and top. I always just walk from the train station to the funicular when I go to Bergamo. A bus leaves the station every 10 minutes for the funicular though. The funicular runs up to 8 times an hour through the middle fo the day.  If you're arriving on a Saturday, there are 8 - 9 trips per hour from 9 in the morning through closing. On weekdays there are 4 trips per hour from 6 pm to 11 pm and 4 more trips between 11 pm and 12:11.  The specific funicular schedule is at: http://www.atb.bergamo.it/2colonne.asp?I... Click on the next to last link in the list on the left side of the page - funicolare Citta alta - citta bassa (upper city - lower city). On the next page click on any of the 4 yellow boxes. It really doesn't matter because the trains leave the upper and lower stations simultaneously due to the nature of a funicular.

As shown on the map, it is busline 1 that you want to reach Citta Alta. The bus from the airport to Bergamo runs from 6:05 am until 12:15 am and costs euro 1.65. They run roughly every 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions and takes about 15 minutes to reach the stop at the train station and about another 15 minutes to get to the last stop in Citta Alta. You can take the bus all the way to the Citta Alta or get off at the funicular stop and take it up the hill. http://www.orioaeroporto.it/Editorial/ne...
