  1. 1. Stay away from the Chinese scooters.  There are people posting in YA all the time about not being able to get parts or service.

    2. Find a scooter that is comfortable, one that fits you physically.  You should be able to put both feet on the ground why sitting on the seat.

    3. Buy a scooter that fits your needs.  If you only need to travel a couple of miles each way, a smaller engine (50cc - 125cc) will be enough.  If you need to travel more than 10 miles each way, then you'll want to consider a larger engine (150cc - 250cc).  There are some scooters that have 650cc engines, if you really think you need the power.  Get a 4 stroke engine, they are quiter and more reliable than a 2 stroke engines.

    4. Get some safe riding gear.  An approved/legal helmet, motorcycle jacket (doesn't have to be leather, but it should be made specifically for motorcycling), boots that protect the ankle and don't have fashion heels (short heels are OK, no high heels), and gloves (this is for better grip on the controls).  Quality gear is meant to prevent accidents as well as prevent injury in the event of an accident.

    5. An endorsement on your license so that you can legally operate a scooter.

Most scooters come with storage compartments under the seat, find one that will allow you to put your helmet and gloves away so don't have to tote them with you all of the time.  Most bikes come with electric start but make sure before you purchase.  Disc brakes are desirable, especially on the larger models. That's the basics.

BTW some of the people that respond in the MC section aren't what you would call deep thinkers.
