Question:

What to Buy? What to Rent? South Lake Tahoe Trip - January

I am taking my daughter to South Lake Tahoe in January for a week.

We are planning to do the following:

Snowboard lessons x 2 days

Dog Sledding

Snowmobile

Sleigh Ride

Shopping

And what ever else we find that looks fun.

Being from Texas, we have never been in real winter weather before and I want to make sure we are reasonably prepared.

I'm at least sure we will need some type of winterboot but not sure we need a snowboot?

There seems to be a layering order that goes on but I'm not sure how many sets of layers we need?

I just for grins started putting things in a cart online and it ran up to $1k really quickly....while I don't mind the expense we have wanted to go for years, I would appreciate some direction in getting what we really need.

Thanks soooo much for your time and help!~

  1. I also answered your other question.... here's the simple way to do it- and hopefully the cheapest. The order is thus, your normal undies, PLUS longjohn top and bottom, your normal wither typ clothes that you would already have (jeans/pullover sweater or sweatshirt) then snow pants or snowsuit and ski jacket and YES snow boots. Wear heavy socks or 2 pairs. You should only have to actually buy the last 3 items and it won't be that expensive. You can get it all when you arrive at almost any discount place like Walmart/Target, etc. Again, have fun!

  2. well I would definitely buy the things and not rent. I suggest getting: snow jackets, snow pants, gloves or mittens, sweaters, jeans or warm pants. hats, warm boots that are waterproof (probably snow boots would be best,) warm socks and warm clothes that you will want to go around town in (definately bring lots of socks, underwear and shoes.) You will need to rent for the things you are going to do: snowboards, snow goggles, the dogsled with dogs, the sleigh, and snowmobiles. Hope you have fun!!!! I love Tahoe.

  3. O.K... dress for snowboarding and you got everything pretty much covered. You'll of course bring your usual things like jeans and sweaters or sweatshirts. Most of the stuff you could buy here at even the local Safeway. Everyone will sell snow pants and jackets. If you plan to return often or use the snow clothes often then you should buy quality, but for one week... who cares? Think water proof though. January is chilly especially at night. I had a friend who made up a song he's sing before he'd go snowboarding everyday...

Boots, Pants, Jacket, Beanie, Goggles, Gloves.

IF you get those things you're good.

Oh, and I've lived here for 11 years and not once have I seen or heard  of anyone dog sledding.
