  1. Here's a great list:

  2. I attended college in the south and a big, well made (not cheap chinese made) umbrella saved me on many rainy days.  A paperback webster dictionary will be a great help in understanding english terms.  Little brown handbook for grammer.  Jumper cables if you have a car and learn how to use them. If you don't use them, you can be someone else's hero by having them. Don't let your male friends wear their highschool football jacket on campus, that's a common freshman mistake.  A camera to capture those priceless memories.

  3. I think it's good to bring a microwave and mini-fridge. Talk this out with your roommate/s (if you're going to have any) so both of you guys don't have these appliances all over your room. They are definitely worth having especially when a lot of us are lazy. Haha. Typical dorm rooms aren't very big but definitely check out how big your room is before you bring too much. (It's a pain in the butt to move it all out at the end.)

If you are a gamer and going to bring up consoles or bringing something really expensive, I suggest you get to learn your roommates and floormates before you show it to them. There's going to be a lot more stealing now that you're around these people. You should also get noise-canceller earphones if you get bothered by noise easily. They will be definitely worth it when people around aren't being very courteous. Also don't forget an alarm clock!

I'm sure you've gotten most of your essentials already but there's no need to worry about it. I'm sure there are stores near your school where you can buy them. I remember asking this same question to myself last year (I'm becoming a sophomore this fall), and I definitely worried too much about it.

Hope you enjoy your move-in day and first year!

  4. Dear JD,

Relax....Take a deep breath. You have started a great adventure. Pace yourself....In today's economy you understand that you will need a post-graduate degree.

The fact you have made it this far should provide you comfort that success follows success.

Walk around the campus a few times. Meet as may people from as many backgrounds as possible. You never know where your interaction will lead you.

Prepare to study two plus hours out of class for every hour in class. Do the required reading. Try to look at the recommended non-essential reading.  Consider taking the optional/remedial type courses offered in note taking, test preparation and reading assistance. These are usually one to ten hours and will provide you valuable information that is highly valuable and significant for your Campus.

If allowed obtain a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. All will be essential over the course of semester one.

Neither alcohol nor drugs have ever been found to be helpful on campus. You have a lifetime to be stoned and stupid. Complete school first. Avoid/minimize contact with ALL who disagree with this assessment. NO GRADES ARE GIVEN FOR PARTYING 101 and the caffeine based drugs given to enhance performance by letting you stay up late and study are self defeating. If you got to take something try Ginko Bilba which has been proven to improve blood flow including circulation to the brain. Also a good vitamin supplement might be considered.

Take time getting to know  roommates and all friends. ALWAYS BE CORDIAL AND FRIENDLY. Do not make fast assessments....

If you need to buy a laptop buy one with a 13" or 14" display if you will be carrying it around. Lighter is better. Have a very good protective case as it will get stepped on, pushed off counters, spilled upon  and  left inadvertantly in precarious places.

Enjoy the experience and use this opportunity to explore areas never before available to you. Do not be afraid that you do not know your major. Since your will need a graduate school, your selection of a major is non-critical.

You are in an envious position. Use it and enjoy it without reservation or hesitation.

You do not need luck because it is evident you have talent.

    NOTWITHSTANDING....GOOD LUCK!!!
