What to do, what to buy?

Next summer I'm going to Italy as part of a school function. We are visiting Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Pompeii, and some others. You know, the major attractions. So what I'm wondering is, what are some good things to do at some of these places during my free time. And what would you suggest to buy for a good keepsake or souvenior. If you have any suggestions on any subject regarding Italy, please tell me here. I'm dying for any information! Thanks!!!

  1. like another said, a great camera would be the best.  something with a great optical zoom and a huge memory card.  our pictures we took are my favorite souveniors!  but do look into the different goods that you can find in the open-air markets.  find items you can decorate a home or personal space with, not necessarily functional.  i still wish i had bought that david kitchen apron.  get some chocolates and wine!

  2. Make sure you invest in a good digital camera and memory card. Buy the Frommers travel guide it has tons of info on off beat places, best places ect ect... and be safe!

  3. make s*x everyday and eat a lot.

  4. I have the same question because I am also going to Rome this summer for school.  I hope you have a great time.

  5. I went to all those places 2 years ago, so here's my advise... Other than a good camera and a Frommer's Guide:

While in Rome, try to go on a city tour, that will take you to all the main spots, the coliseum, the forum, the trevi fountain, spanish steps, etc, and make sure to go to the Vatican...the sistine chapel is breathtaking.  You should be able to do it all in one day.  I would only recommend spending one day in Rome.  It is very crowded, dirty and busy like L.A. or NY.

Pisa and Pompeii are only a few hours of site seeing... you're in and out.

Florence is small but beautiful...make sure you have the Gelato!! I would go to the museum and see the DAvid, and the outdoor market for souvenirs....cheap leather goods are nice.

Venice is an interesting place, we got a little lost there....Make sure you take a gondola ride and the best souvenir would be to get some Murano glass jewelry....

    I hope this helps...

  6. Florence has great leather goods.  There is also a nice open air market that is in the center of town where you can buy relatively inexpensive souvenirs.  They have beautiful handmade journals and handmade papers as well as lots of scarves in every imaginable color and fabric.
