What to do about a severe fracture in my 8 month old Chihuahua.?

He got excited when I went to feed him this morning, jumped up, twirled around, and landed on it in an awful angle and started crying. We took him to the vet E.R., and they're charging us $540 for him to stay the night. The doctor quoted $2,000 for orthopedic surgery. I DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY! We were denied for a CareCredit credit card, and don't have many options. My question is, are there other options? Could it heal properly or at least funtionally in a cast itself? I don't want to give him up because I know the shelter will just put him down; they only take pets that are ready to adopt. What do I do?

  1. Did you ask the vet if he would take payments? Maybe put it on your credit card. Good Luck

  2. Oh goodness! I can relate to this, only it was much more for my horse.  Try to see if you can get a loan through Wells Fargo. I know you may not want to , but it may be your only option. I would also talk to the clinic and ask them if they could work with you. That is what I did, and they were very nice about it and gave me some time. And my vet bill was over $5,000

  3. With a severe fracture, if casting were an option the vet would have given you that option.  The only other alternative may be amputation, dogs adjust amazingly well to life on 3 legs. I don't know what that cost would be though.

You might want to call other vets to see if they have a second opinion and possibly lower cost surgery.
