I just got a new job as an elementary school lunchlady. During recess, I have to watch over the children as well. Sometimes I see children picking on their classmates while playing outside. What should I do?

  1. ur an adult so they would see you as they would see their own teacher, tell them to behave themselves and be nice to their friends or they would have to find someone else to play with.....that usually worked.....

with the preschool kids, i would often go into detail about how do u think it makes him feel when you tease him? do u think that makes him feel nice?....and stuff like that! it helps them understand why it isnt nice, and they realize they wouldnt like that to be done to them......then again, when i was a preschool teacher, i has 3 year olds!

  2. Part of my job is to go outside b-4 school starts and keep an eye on the kids. They can be very cruel to each other. What I do is bring them both aside and ask how they feel when one person picks on another. Both seem to understand it hurts the other person, it's the why they have to figure out. Then I ask them to take a walk around the playground together and tell the other person something they like about them. By the time they get 1/2 thru the walk, it's over and they're usually very good friends afterwards. If that doesn't work I play a game with them like red lightl green light where they both become winners eventually. The other kids join in and all's right with the world again. Good luck.

  3. What you have going for you right now is that they don't know you.  They don't know how you will react, so they are afraid to push you.  Be vigilant and firm with them.  Establish that you are there to watch them, and they can't behave that way quickly, so they won't keep trying to see how much they can get away with.  Usually, if you are close to the kids doing the picking on, they will knock it off, so they don't get caught.  Remember, this is close to bullying, and most schools have strict no bullying policies.
