Question:

What to do about my elaborate "dream" wedding dress during our first dance?

My fiance and I have been practicing swing dancing for over a year now and want to do a really amazing dance for our first dance. My problem is my dress. It's quite large and certainly not conducive to swing dancing. What should I do? Should I buy a 2nd dress to wear for our first dance? If so, can you suggest some dresses that would work? Should they be wedding dresses, just more casual than my wedding dress or what? If we do the first dance in an alternate dress should I wear it the rest of the night or change back into my wedding dress? Thanks!

  1. I did a foxtrot in my "BIG" wedding dress but I never expected to dance very well in it lol. Plus u need to be more free to do a swing dance.

Buy another dress. Something simple - like a cocktail dress. Try and keep it white maybe. Or the colours of ur wedding. I strongly suggest u change back into ur wedding dress after. I changed into a "party" dress half way through the reception and I regret it. I felt so special wearing my wedding dress then for the rest of the night I felt like it was my birthday or something. U only get one change to wear a wedding dress. Milk it for all its worth lol.

    Congrates and all the best

  2. If you really want to do Swing Dancing then just find a white dress that you can swing dance in. If you continue to wear the swing dress or change back to your wedding dress is completely your call though, the swing dress would probably be a bit more comfortable for the rest of the evening of dancing and partying.

  3. I would buy a 2nd simple dress that would work with the dance. You can then switch back into your wedding gown. Try buying the second dress as something you could wear again or even change into before you leave your wedding.

  4. Buy a different dress, nobody wants to look like a prat on their wedding day. I'd get a shorter one than a wedding dress if you're swing dancing - something that just covers the knees. I would also make it slightly less formal than a wedding dress, but only slightly. And you should probably stay in it for the rest of the night otherwise people will become confused and start asking annoying questions like 'i swear you were just wearing a different dress?' and 'what happened to that dress you were just wearing' and however much you love them after a while you will want to hit them in the face.

  5. Your dress could be something you would comfortably wear for swing dancing and then you just wear it the rest of the night and use it as a going away dress, too

  6. There are lots of people who change from their wedding gowns into something more comfortable for the reception. Or you could find a dress with a detachable skirt. These are sometimes a bit hard to find, so you'd probably have to have one made or alter an existing dress. Here's an article that mentions them.

And a website that sells one. It's the third one from the bottom named "Clara"

  7. I agree with Xavier. That's what I think you should do.

  8. I bought a second dress. We are doing a tango and there was no way I could wear a sheath and do the moves we are doing. I am going to change after dinner before first dance, I think...

  9. once you Bessel the dress and just do it,  it should be great, but if you do decide to change the dress you shouldn't change back.

  10. if you are doing a swing dance why not hit the 'vintage' style shops and find a dress that would really wow them!  the swing era had really awesome dresses and styles - i am sure you will find one that would make everyone's eyes pop!

if it were me i would stay in the dance dress!

    good luck and happy wedding!

  11. I would suggest buying a smaller white dress for the dance.  Look for normal dresses, not wedding dresses just as long as they are white.   You can find really nice and affordable ones at Nordstrom, just search for white dresses.

If I were you, I would definitely change back to your "DREAM" wedding dress.  I am sure you paid a whole lot of money for it, you need to enjoy that dress!  Remember you will never wear it again, so make the most out of it.

    Good luck and congrats

  12. Do a regular first dance and wear your beautiful dress most the night.  then change into a cute white dress you can dance in and do the swing dance later on
