Question:

What to do about pulled hip flexor?

I am a 16 year old sprinter. Back on April 2nd, I pulled my hip flexor doing a 200 meter sprint at a meet. So, I layed off the running for about a week, doing bicycles and using the elliptical machine. I didn't feel any pain and had full range of motion. So I began running half-speed and still felt fine. However, when I tried running full speed, the pain reappeared. Again, I laid off the running, this time for 2 weeks. I started to feel better, so I tried running half-speed with no problems whatsoever. However, just today at practice, all I did was practice long jumping (no other running) and it hurts AGAIN. Should I be waiting longer for recovery and if so, how do I know when I'm ready? Or is it something that will eventually lighten up and I should just run through it? Or is it possibly something more serious? I'm getting really frustrated and any advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks!

  1. I know you probably don't want to, but you need to go to a specialist. It could be something serious. I had the same thing happen and I continued running through the pain for a long time. Now, they are telling me that if I want to get rid of it that I have to have surgery. Rest is the only thing that helps. I had to take about 3 months off just to get the pain to lessen. Now, I have to adjust my workouts and run on grass. I have to stretch for long periods of time and warm-up my muscles. You need to take care of this now before it elevates and gets worse. Good Luck! I hope you get better!
