Question:

What to do about rough sides on inground pool?

We have had this happen twice on diferent pools; the sides of our inground pool after winter becomes incredibly rough. like almost worse than 50 grain sand paper. the odd thing is is that it isn't like that on the steps or the most of the bottom. dirt gathers on the steps alot and I would think of all places that would be where it would gather. its a chlorine pool by the way.

anyone know how what this is / what caused it / how to get rid of it?

  1. It's possibly calcium deposits. They do tend to form at the winterizing water line down a foot or so in some marbalite pools and are clear in colour as a rule. They're about the size of sand grains. You can use a product called Pool Block. You can find it at most pool shops. All it is , is a large block of pumice. You can use it under water or above and it's perfectly safe for your pool finish. If you use it above water, wet it and the area you plan to work on and rinse after you scrub.

If this is a vinyl pool ( they form on vinyl too, but it's rare), get out your 3M kitchen scrubbie.  Those pads work well for taking just about any stain or mineral deposit off a vinyl surface without harming the vinyl.

The cause of this happening isn't necessarily a problem with your water chemistry. Even a properly balanced pool can develop them on closing. It's a sudden temperature drop that brings it out of solution that does it in this case but you might be wise to take a sample in for testing, in particular your calcium hardness.

  2. if a lot of the pool is like that and if there is a lot of wrinkles throughout the pool liner it could be that your water is unbalanced so unbalanced that it is searching for it in the water trying to find the source and can put permanent wrinkles in your liner and also wear down the liner causing it to feel like paper you could just rip right in half like its nothing. if it is out of balanced for to long you can cut the liners life time in half or better. or it could be a mineral issue that can make it feel like that you need to use a sequestering agent weekly and anytime you add water in the pool but it will not take effect overnight it will take many many weeks.
