Question:

What to do about smelly drains?

Does anyone have a way of getting the stench out of the kitchen sink drain? I've used an entire box of baking soda to no avail. This has just recently begun to smell. I've lived here a long time and now I have no idea what the heck is going on. I don't have a garbage disposal. This is in both sinks. I can't stand it and would like some good ideas. Thank you.

  1. You dump baking soda down and then add vinegar! Vinegar is the 2nd ingredient that makes things clean and it will clear debris too.

  2. Chlorine bleach will clean it and remove the smell.  If your house is quite old and the kitchen waste pipe goes into an open gulley then have a clean round that too.  Check it is not blocked and clean with chlorine bleach or Jeyes Fluid.  Sometimes if it is blocked outside it will make it smell inside.

  3. Try lemon juice.  Get some lemons, cut them up, and squeeze the juice down the drain.  It works for mine.

  4. I use Drano, then use bleach or baking soda (depends on my mood).  It might work for you?

  5. Well I always use ice with a lil lemon and I crush it in there and it works great.

  6. Caustic Soda will destroy anything that's trapped in your U bend, which is where the stench is coming from.  If the drain is rarely used, running water down it twice a week will prevent it from drying up and smelling

  7. Let the water run through it for like 10 minutes, doesnt matter if its cold or hot. This will run things through and clean it out - theres no need to use all kinds of chemicals/lemons/baking soda...etc.
