Question:

What to do about these gas prices?

What the heck can we do about the crazy cost of gas. it almost makes me sick to my stomache to know that they are rapidly increasing and will soon be at $5/gal! My family doesn't drive anymore than we have to and once we are home from work we stay there and make stops that are only along the way home...we even just traded in our gas hog blazer for a more fuel efficient car, but we can't afford these electric cars either. We are still spending more on gas per month than we do on anything else, and almost as much as we pay for rent.

What has to give? We have cut back all we can. Someone else has to do something. This is soooo frustrating. My family lives 12 hours away and it has even affected seeing my own family b/c none of us can afford and extra several hundred bucks to drive to and from. Seriously...why is this so messed up and WHO is in control of it? I swear, if I didn't know better, I'd say the end is coming.

  2. You sound like you live in a place like my dad used to.  His house was 8 miles from the city limits.  The town only had a population of 25,000 so public transportation was nonexistent.  On the way into town there there were only a few other houses.  8 miles was to far to walk.  Riding a bike was problematic since the road was busy and the speed limit was 55.

You've done all you can short of just giving up, becoming Amish, living self sufficiently and without technology.  If you had a diesel car you could make your own biodiesel form waste cooking oil (usually free).  The process and equipment is relatively simple and requires only 2 additional ingredients, one of them available at the local hardware store.  With a less than $2 a gallon price and french fry smelling exhaust you'd be OK.

Alternative 2 is setup a wind turbine and make electricity.  Sell the excess to the grid.  Build your own electric car (check out http://www.kiwiev.com ) and charge up with the wind generator.

The situation is messed up because all the auto makers cared about for the last 11 years is selling the big gas eating SUV's.  GM and the other auto makers (plus the government) would rather destroy (aka crush) the cheapest and fastest solution to this mess in pursuit of profit (see the film "Who Killed the Electric Car").  Now we are reaping the benefit of 11 years of poor decision making and greed of both the car and oil companies.  And they DON'T really care either, profit is the only goal.  (ps Bush was an oil company executive.)

  3. I man relax because you could always get a Moped and save $300 or more in gas if you get a moped because then you can use your other vehicle to visit your family

  4. All that I can add is type in to either Google or YouTube "Hypermiling".  For me it has really made me keenly aware of how I am driving or riding.  I have started to employ some of the techniques of hypermiling and am noticing a decrease in gas consumption.

Check out the guy below.  More than anything, it is the person behind the wheel that makes the difference.  I have always stated we need skilled drivers today more than ever.  If everyone drove the way of hypermilers, not only would we drastically reduce the amount of gas we import, but would dramatically reduce accidents.  Less accidents, less gas going to waste from all the delays these accidents incur.

  5. Muntany

  6. Maybe you should get a second job, or sell your kids.

  7. Gas is plentiful and there is no problem at all. I make good money and buy all I want. I always have a full tank. Note: I make over 100,000 per year so there is no problem for me.

  8. krisandamy@gmail.com email them the question, they have a very good solution.

  9. Yep. It's all about supply vs demand.

Oil is a global commodity that is in high demand world wide. Every day the demand goes up world wide. It never goes down. In 2003 China's demand went up 30%. India  isn't far behind.

Oil is traded on a global market based on supply vs demand. Anything that upsets the supply anywhere on the planet affects the price on the market.

One big way to cut back is to use as little gas as you can. Another is not to buy anyhting thats made of plastic (soda bottles for one). It takes oil to make plastic.

We have to find a way to do without OIL!

  10. it's all about supply and demand. the more cars are on the road the more people need gas.

until we stop buying gas the prices are just going to get higher and higher.

i, too avoid going places because it also helps me to not spend more money that i don't need to spend.

    it is frustrating. i agree.

take comfort and know that we are all feeling the crunch. :-)

i miss the days where i could pay $20 for a tank of gas and get a couple of dollars back for a diet coke, and the gas would last for awhile.

    sigh.
