i want my sweet 16 to be a murder mystery party, but i feel like my friends wouldnt go all out for it and it wouldnt be fun, so im not sure. i dont like scripted murder mystery partys because i think theyre stupid, but i think if there wasnt a script then my friends wouldnt do it, they would just talk about other things. do you have any ideas on what i can do to make the party really fun and make people want to participate in the murder mystery? also, if you have ever been to a murder mystery party that was relly fun and a big hit, what made it so much fun?

  1. Post It notes around the house with clues and stuff

  2. There are tons of good options for teens at My Mystery Party (just search for that on the search engine).  I would suggest doing the 70s or 80s theme as it is real easy for your friends to get into character for those!

  3. hi. i've attended two murder mystery parties and held one. for my 14th birthday i held a circus themed one off the internet - all my friends thought it was great!

i had the same doubts as you, i didn't think a few of my friends would really get in character. Depending on the theme of your party (circus, beauty pageant, high school reunion) have the same themed decorations and food all around the place.

helium balloons are an awesome decoration, you can get them in any colour you want and people can take them home later, cause you probably don't have a use for 100 helium balloons =]

another great thing is a chocolate fountain! i have one of these at home because i'm a total addict (my friends all chipped in and bought it for my birthday) and it could be instead of the conventional birthday cake. buy fruit and marshmallows and stuff and plastic shot glasses to fill up. it's awesome!! (unless your allergic or something =S)

make the invitation interesting and assign characters to the friends you think will suit them best. this will make it easier for your friends to get in character. write on the invitation that it's compulsory to dress as your character would dress etc.

just by encouraging them to forget about their image for the night, should be enough for them to have some fun.

if you haven't already bought one, there are HEAPS of different brands out there, most you can order from the internet. google "murder mystery party" and it'll come up with hundreds of options. then you have to choose the version which suits you best - and remember they all require different numbers of people, so get your numbers before you order it. also remember to factor in shipping/delivery time you don't want the game to arrive AFTER the party was scheduled! =]

good luck and remember this party is all about you, so don't try and cater for everybody elses needs before your own. it's more important that you enjoy yourself - seeing as it is your birthday!

    p.s. happy birthday!

    xx

  4. Murder mysteries can be a great time, but your friends have to be willing to participate in some shape or form for it to be successful.

I will be honest if your friends always want to be entertained and find fault with stuff and call things stupid before giving them a chance well... this might be a hard sale.

I have found that friends take a chance and follow through it can be a great time. And their are a lot of games for teens so you can get a scripted one or one that is flexible.

I have found that school groups that are into arts and theater really enjoy them. And I saw one game where you just needed 6 to 8 people to perform and the rest of the guests where the detectives.
