My boyfriend and I are 21 and going to cancun this August staying in Riu Cancun. What is there to do and what clubs and restaurants can be recommended, also what day things to do? Are there any private beaches? Is cancun very traditional mexican, or is it just like a normal holiday resort? Thanks

  1. For the best advice call 1-888-862-3806. The Mexico Experts, they are in Cancun and can arrange everything.

  2. You will have a great time in Cancun! The Riu is in the tourist area so you will be near lots of restaurants and clubs within walking distance. There are quite a few chain restaurants in that area. My advice would be to figure out the bus system - it's not hard and it's not expensive. For less than a dollar you can ride the entire hotel zone and downtown. My favorite Cancun restaurant is downtown. LaParilla. Definately check it out - the food is authentic and the atmosphere is awesome. Take the bus to the Walmart and then grab a cab. Many cab drivers speak english. There are lots of americanized malls - some indoor, some outdoor. Also check out the markets - you can take the bus there as well. At the markets you will find handcrafted items and souveniers. Do a day trip to Isle Murejas. You can take a ferry for about $12.00. Or you can take a tour. My family took a party boat to the island where we hung out all day on a private beach. Meals and drinks were included. I think it was Best Day Tours. Cancun is not very traditional - it is pretty touristy. Many people speak english. Be careful of the time share sharks - they will get on your last nerve - ignore them from the start even if you feel rude. That is the only way to avoid it. Also - the bus system is great - just don't try to ride between 4:30 pm and about 6:00. At this time the buses are filled with locals heading home. And I do mean filled. Have Fun!

  3. okay...here goes!!!  First....you are in a perfect location....within walking distance to all the clubs and nightlife.  Clubs....Coco Bongo, Dady O, The City, Bulldog Cafe, XX Bar, and Congo Bar.  Short bus ride to Margaritavile and Pat Obriens.  Also there is Carlos and Charlie and Senor Frog.  Shrimp Bucket and Bubba Gump are good restaurants to go to for seafood that is at a reasonable price.  You should take a trip to Xcaret or Xel Ha.  Xel Ha is my favorite between the two.  Also, the Caribbean Carnival is a fun trip....to Isla Mujures....day or night.  The Captain Hook Dinner Cruise is also a good one.  You should take one day to go to Isla Mujures and check it out.  Cancun is not as traditional Mexican as it use to be.....it has turned more into a tourist destination, but still many good things to do.  If you want to see more of the traditional Mexico....go to 5th Avenue in Playa Del Carmen....about a 45 minute bus ride South of Cancun.  A good all day trip if you are looking for something like that.  There are so many things to do you will have to make a second trip to see one half of it.  Talk with your Concierge at the resort and he will give you a lot of information......also hang with the animation crew at the pool for the night clubs.....it is always more fun to go with the hotel group and you get VIP seating and special prices.  You are going to love Cancun.

  4. Night life_ Senor Frogs!  A great time!

  5. Riu Cancun is a wonderful All-Inclusive, within walking distance of the area known as the Party Center. You will find an amazing array of clubs, restaurants (not like you will need too many), shops and outdoor cantinas. I recommend that you shop for souvenirs at the outlet known as Plaza La Fiesta, an indoor flea market of sorts. You can also shop at the more traditional outdoor markets of Coral ***** and Plaza El Zocalo. The outdoor markets have more "aggressive" sales people who will ask you to visit their stores. Don't be put off by this, it is simply the tradition of outdoor Mexican markets.

Clubs in the area that are must visit places include:

Coco Bongo-wonderful assortment of shows mixed in with DJs spinning popular music.

Dady Rock-get the club pass to all 3 Dady clubs including Dady 'O and O Ultra Club.

The City-like Coco Bongo in that they present shows, don't miss the little lounge room where they spin more of a techno mix

Bulldog Cafe-like Dady Rock they have live rock bands, this place is a larger venue.

Around the Party Center are smaller bars and some are outdoors. You should check them out, some names include:

    Carlos 'n Charlie's

    Corona Bar

    XX Dos Equis

Nectar - outdoor after hours club on the lagoon

    Slices

A little further south of the Party Center you will find places such as:

Basic-outdoor techno dance club, known for shooting water around the club so don't dress in your best attire.

    Señor Frog's-a Cancun mainstay

    Pat O'Brien's-US New Orleans import

    Margaritaville

I highly recommend you do a tour to the Mayan ruins. However, the site of Chichen Itza may be quite hot at this time of year. Even though this is the more spectacular site of them all, I suggest you save it for a future trip. Instead visit the site of Tulum, overlooking the Caribbean Sea, it will remain cooler than Chichen Itza. A good aspect to this tour is that you combine it with a stop at an area eco park. I recommend you visit Xel-Ha and get the All-Inclusive package to save time and a lot of money. Xcaret is another area eco park, but I would do this on it's own day trip, and not try to combine it with Tulum. This is because it is much too large to see if you combine it with Tulum.

I highly recommend you do tours that will put you in the water. Snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, etc., etc. Lucky you, since you are traveling during the summer, this is the only time of year the swim with whale sharks takes place. Don't wait to reserve this tour because they tend to sell out well in advance. This is a fairly new tour, get more info and book with these people because they offer a liberal cancelation/rescheduling policy and they have their license number on the website:

Finally, don't waste your money on a tour to Isla Mujeres because you can see it on your own self guided day trip. The best way is to go with Dolphin Discovery to do a swim with dolphins, then leave their grounds and explore the island on your own. You should have them call you a taxi to take you to the northern town. Once you are there, rent a golf cart and explore the island. There is a wonderful restaurant on Playa Lancheros where they serve the best Mayan fish known as Tikkin-Xic (pronounced Teek-een-chick).

You are so lucky, the Riu is an amazing resort, you're gonna have a great time.

  6. OMG your soo lucky i wish i could go back. ok when i went (like 4 years ago) it was soo hot but anyways ok you got to go to all the attractions like Xichen-itza (im not sure about the spelling) but you can see there the original ball game or Juego de pelota wich is very cool ( idk if youve seen the cartoon movie "camino hacia el dorado" but its a good example of juego de pelota) you can also go snorkleing, theres alot of animal shows and at nite theres an awsome show bout the owl. Theres also a place called "tres rios"  that when you get there you get to go on a nature bike ride and then you get on a canoe and then you get to the shore where theres a restaurant or you can s****. dive or go kayaking. Theres also island like "isla mujeres" and sooo many other things. for clubs theres Sr. Frogs wich i would say that it was the best over there. It is very americanized because of all the toursit attractions that they have, but it is very VERY much worth going. heres a like of people that have gone and left comment about it. hope you have soo much fun.
