What to do in Mexico City during a 16h stopover?

I will be stopping over at MEX, and will be arriving there at about 8pm, and would have to be the next day at the airport at about 12:30 noon.

A friend of mine will be picking me up there, so I will not be dependent on taxis and whatnot.

Can anyone give me suggestions as to what I should do, places to visit and take pictures, places to eat, etc...? I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

  1. mmm you`re going to arrive in a "hora pico" so there will be traffic, you can go to down town, is beautiful and it is not dangerous, there`s a lot of vigilance and you can park the car in the street after 10 pm. Or you can go to Polanco, Zona Rosa where there are a lot of restaurants, bars, etc. There`re a lot of discos in downtown, Zona Rosa, Polanco, Insurgentes, etc.

You can find a lot of restaurants, differents types of food and different prices. So just choose one, you can found them everywhere.

The pictures . . . in the same places, in downtown is la Catedral, el Templo Mayor, a lot of ancients buildings, a lot of museums (but there are not going to be open, just the Centro Cultural España, but actually is not a museum, is a gallery and it has restaurant)

Yes, you can go there, you can dinner, if there`s week-end you can enjoy the show, cause sometimes different bands plays or dj`s . . .

There are a lot of things to do here in Mexico. You can also go to the south of the city, there are a lot of things, restaurants, discos, bars, etc.

And everywhere you go you can find something cool :)

  2. Since you arrive a little late (and it takes an hour or two to move from the airport to any location in MEX city).......I recommend you to go out for a dine...lots of good restaurants in Mexico City and / or a visit to the Coyoacan District / or Condesa District (both are bohemian / cultural / retro spots specialy in weekends). I think Mex downtown may be a little dangerous at that hour (some friends told me that robbery rates in downtown had been decresaed in the past years but dont know)....

Favorite Restaurants in Mex city are:

    French Cuisine:

Le Cirque (At the Camino Real Hotel near Reforma Ave), Au Pied du Cochon (InterContinental Hotel).

    Mexican Cuisine:

Izote (Right on the super classy Presidente Mazarik Ave / Polanco District), El Cardenal (At the Sheraton Hotel Centro Historico).

    Argentinean Cuisine:

Puerto Madero, Cambalache (Insurgentes Sur Ave).

    International:

Bellinis (at the top of the WTC Mexico / the restaurant structure at the top of the building rotates offering a 360º view of Mex city at night).

    Mediterranean:

    L' osteria del becco

    Chinese:

China Grill (At the Camino Real Hotel).

For the next morning, wake up early and try to make a stop in the way to the airport (dont know in which district are you going to stay) but a 1 hour walk in the Paseo de la Reforma Ave, at the  Bosque de Chapultepec, or maybe in the zocalo will worth it.....just be aware that traffic in Mexico City can be a total chaos......
