mid to late October the weather is very nice. It may be early for the autumn leaves though. I suggest going to Hakone where you should get clear views of Mt. Fuji.

In Kyoto on October 22 there are two festivals worth checking out-

1. The Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages)

In Nikko on Oct 18 they have a festival with a procession of people in period costumes.

For me you have to go on the bullet train just for the experience of going to that speed. You can aim to visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Mt Fiji. It all depends on how much time you have because there is so much to see.

Go up to Bandai or Nikko for Autumn leaf viewing. The higher the elevation the soon the leaves turn colour.

Japan is beautiful in october! Visit the mountain villages Tsumago and Magome and enjoy the autumn foliage.

It is best if you stay overnight and miss the crowds early morning and late afternoon. There is a hiking trail between the two villages.
