Unfortunately I can't bring my laptop, because electrical outlets in this country won't be compatible with my comp.........so what to do for 15 hours straight???????? some one told me to pop a bunch of sleeping pills before the flight ....ideas?

  1. have quiz books and try solving, go through in flight reading materials, listen to in flight music or even your favorite numbers, watch in flight video and movies, take drinks beside snacks/tea/lunch/dinner and by good luck if you are blessed with a beautiful young spinster by your side seat you may develop friendly chats and believe it the voyage time will become shorter for you.

  2. watch movies using the plane's IFE.

    listen to your MP3

always ask water from the f/a's.

yes, you're correct. drink sleeping pills.

  3. i love listening to loooong audiobooks that i never have time to listen to!!

  4. I love flying.

In your carry-on bag, pack a mp3 player with plenty of batteries, a camera, a good book, paper, a pen, and a neck support pillow.  A book of logic puzzles, wordsearches, etc. is also helpful.

You'll spend almost an hour getting up to altitude and another hour preparing to land, and those hours go fast.  So, you really only have 13 hours cruising through the air.  On a 15-hour flight, you can usually expect to get 2 regular meals and 1 smaller snack/meal.  Watching the meal cart approach, trying to see what's being served and what looks best, getting your food, eating it, getting your trash removed, and then getting served by the post-meal drink cart takes about an hour each time.  That's another 3 hours you can deduct.  So, you really only have 10 hours of "bored time" in the sky.

On a 15-hour flight, you'll probably be shown 3 movies.  You can go to your airline's website and see in advance what movies will be shown on your way there and on the way back.  Then, don't watch these movies before you leave!  They'll be more interesting if you're seeing them for the first time.  If each movie is 100 minutes long, you'll spend 5 hours watching movies.  That leaves you with only 5 hours of "bored time" in the sky.

Keep an open mind about music.  Airplanes have so many interesting/weird/unusual music channels.  I can usually kill 90 minutes channel-surfing through the music, even if I don't particularly like any of it.  That leaves you with only 3hrs and 30 minutes of "bored time."

One way I survive long flights is that I dont' sleep at all the night before I leave.  This would be a bad strategy if you had layovers and needed to be alert to change planes, but it's fine because you'll be on a non-stop flight.  Then, when I'm settled in the airplane, my adrenaline starts to crash.  That's when I put my neck pillow behind me and turn on the trance/electronic music on the airplane radio channel.  They call that music "trance" for a reason.  With fatigue setting in and no adrenaline left and that music in my ears, I easily drift off for a few hours.  If you can zone out for 90 minutes, you'll be left with 2 hours of "bored time."

You'll probably go to the bathroom a few times.  Getting up and down and re-situating yourself in your seat will take up at least half an hour.  You're down to 1 hr and 30 minutes of "bored time."

You can use that 1 hour and 30 minutes to read, listen to your mp3 player, solve logic puzzles, take pictures out the window, or write in a journal.  Or, order extra drinks, ask for an extra hot towel, whatever.  Killing 90 minutes isn't hard.

Also, if you think having your laptop would help you, then go to any electronics store or Walmart, Kmart, etc. and buy an outlet converter for your laptop plug!!  They range in price from $10-$20, but the cheaper ones are fine.  $10 is a nice price to pay for entertainment :)  Most laptops don't require a voltage converter like other electronics do.  Those are an additional $15-40, but you almost definitely won't need one if your laptop is less than a decade old.

Borrowing a small, portable video game system could also be a good idea.

Another thing you can do before you go is have your friends and relatives each write you a little note.  Reading them on the flight is a nice way to take up time.

  5. ipod, book, magazines, watch the movies on the back of the seat in front of you [well, if your plane has that], and/or pop sleeping pills - that always helps.

  6. Take your favorite book with you. Reread it.

    Regards,

    Dan
