What to do when I get the red ring of death?

I just got the red ring of death about an hour ago; what steps do I take to getting it repaired, and do I need to send it back in the original box?

look on craigslist for xbox 360 repair and you can find great deals close to you! its what i did and its worked great for 2 years!!!!
