Doing an emergency stop in a FWD non-ABS car ussually results in a skid.....how can this be avoided?

I could pump the brakes but who would want to do that when you are hurtling towards a car infront, with no control of the steering.

  1. drive more carefully..and more aware of your surroundings...

    "VOTE ...er....SANTA!"

  2. You should pump the brakes if you start skidding.

Actually, a good driver pumping the brakes will stop in a shorter distance than with ABS and the foot hard on the brake, especially when it's slippery. The real advantage of ABS is when you have to steer while braking hard.

Unfortunately most people, myself included, panic when they do an emergency stop and just keep braking harder, so it's a good thing most cars have ABS.

  3. Apply a generous amount of brake pressure.

Try not to lock the brakes but get it as close to the threshold as possible. This is also known as "squeezing" the brakes.

Release a little bit of pressure and swerve right or left. Turn the wheel about 1/4 of a turn. Any more will cause understeer and you'll side into the obstacle.

Look where you want the car to go (the solution) and not at the obstacle (the problem).

After you pass the obstacle, steer back into your lane while keeping your eyes up, looking for more potential problems.

Get on the brakes and stay on the brakes until your vehicle comes to a complete stop.

  4. Pumping the brake and putting the car into a gear lower than the one you are in. Other than that, all you can do is hope for the best

  5. If you skid then on ice steer into the skid to regain traction on the road.  If it is a skid under normal conditions then you should take your foot off the brake, to regain the traction, and then brake again.  To avoid the skid in the first place, don't brake so hard, or as you have suggested pump the brake.  This may seen silly, but it is much more affective than skidding - which means you have lost control of the vehicle and aren't stopping efficiently.

  6. In that case your method for performing the emergency stop is wrong. You're not meant to slam the breaks on. Press the pedal firmly but progressively.

  7. jump out

  8. If the roads are slippery, use the controls – brakes, steering, and accelerator gently, to avoid skidding, it’s far easier to avoid a skid than correct it..

If you don't wanna pump the break, then take your foot off the accelerator and steer smoothly in the direction of the skid until the tyres regain their grip, then steer back onto your intended course. In icy or wet conditions, get into the habit of doubling your normal following distance...

  9. If you're getting into a skid doing an emergency stop....you're doing it wrong.

A skid caused by braking has only one cure, ease off the pedal.

  10. pumping the brakes is the correct thing to do. Its the only option.

  11. if your braking correctly then you shouldn't really be skidding as such, but if you are then pumping the brake pedal, and steering into the skid is the only  action to take

  12. Correct the skid by turning into it and once you have gained controll, aim for the n**i scumbag and proceed to do humanity a favour by running over the sad inadequate loser.

  13. why put yourself in that position,

STAY WELL BACK FROM CAR IN FRONT

read the road ahead of you and the car in front,

the faster you go the more space you need

  14. Always steer in the direction  of your skid, the worst thing you can do is turn against it.

  15. in a skid you will feel your behind moving. in the direction of the skid.. turn the wheel in that direction.. then as you regain control turn the wheel to get you back into a straight line.. in all thease situations you will feel your behind moving turn the wheel in that direction.. ok after mastering this you will be able to do a slight drift..
