What to see? Transport? Accommodation? Can I also go and see Pisa and Venice? Any idea about the costs of travel in Italy? Car or train?

  1. Don't miss Florence!  It is such a beautiful city and so relaxed.  If you have to pick between Florence and Pisa, go with Florence.  Also, if you are interested in the sort of thing and it fits with your plans, see Pompei.  I have never been so moved in all my life and the whole thing is unbelievable.  Try not to cram everything in, allow some time to just enjoy.  We drove every where in a rental car.  It was a bit expensive between toll roads, rental fee, and fuel.  It was also a bit of a hassle at times due to trying to find places to park and being unfamiliar with the cities.  So train would probably be best, you can go at night and sleep on the train.  PLus, the train usually puts you at a good spot in the city.  One thing to invest in while in Rome is the 24 hour subway pass.  It is great to ride on when you need to get across town quickly.

  2. it won`t take you 9 days to see Rome. Places to see: Trevi`s Fountain (it´s amazing), the vatican, the monument to Italy and the old Rome (they´re next to each other), the colesseum (the rocks on the floor around it are original), the place where S.Peter and S.Paul where held prisioners (scary), the catacumbs, cinecitá (where they make the Italian movies), Piazza di Spagnia (where you can take your photo as if you were a model), and many other monuments and gardens... The best way to travel is by train cause it´s cheap and comfortable. If I were you I´d spend some days in Rome and then travel to the North and see Pisa, Milan (beautiful cathedral) and some other cities. You`ll love it. And if you want to bring some gifts home, try the main street in Rome: there are some chinese people who will paint any name you´d like in chinese... it´s beatiful (and of course don`t forget the silk ties - which are really cheap and of great quality)

  3. If you're a nervous driver don't hire a car. The drivers there are shocking. If you're going to Rome I'd recommend you take a train or stay in the city as parking is hard to fine and you'll be fined if you park just anywhere. The Italians tend to double and treble park also so you could come back to your car and find it blocked in.

If you do hire a car do it in advance. Its cheeper and if you fly our to Pisa which is very popular they do run out of cars at the airport.(this happened to me!)

Train travel is very easy and there are plenty of trains to the major destinations.

If you go to Pisa from Rome you can see FLorence on the way. Venice has a Terminal on the Grand Canal called Ferrovia also.

Try Venere.com for accomodation, I've used them loads of times and they are great. I recommend the Hotel David, Piazzalle Michelangelo 1, Florence. The Locanda Arco Antica in Venice, Holiday Inn Castel Volturno, Naples.

Here are some web sites that may help. I'd also recommend that you book your museum and gallery tickets to save you time and queing.

Oh I almost forgot, a little Italian goes a long way. Try this site if you want to learn a few phrases.

  4. Rome-2 nights-Vatican, Collosseum, Trevi Fountain, Old Rome

    Florence-1 night- museums

    Pisa-day trip

    Lucca-1 night-bike on the wall

Cinque Terre-2 nights-walk, train, ferry around 5 towns

Lake Como-1 night-ferry around the lake, Bellagio

    Venice-1-2 nights- San Marco, Murano

Train and car combination (train to big cities and drive to smaller cities).

The cost really depends on how much you want to spend.  In general I think it is not too expensive.

You might want to try an apartment in Rome.  We had good luck and enjoyed the stay there.

    Hotel Casci in Florence.

    Lucca- www.palazzo-alexander.com

  5. breathe in the atmosphere, just breathe it in....

  6. i have found that the metro and walking were the best ways to see rome.  of course, you cant miss all the "big" stuff while youre there - the colloseum, trevi fountain, piazza navona... but theres also something you may not know about!

there is a key hole in rome where you look through it and you will see the most spectacular views of st peters.  its the door of the knights of malta on the aventine hill.  it is worth the walk!  trust me!

as for traveling to pisa and venice you can do that easily on day trips (or take a few days).  the trains there run all day and it is not expensive at all to travel by train. :)

  7. While in Rome, do as Romans do.

Just get out in the street and see EVERYTHING!

Buy the thick red guide, Roma e dintorni, which they hopefully have in english. (If they don't have it, the Micheline guide will do the trick)

There's a nice (and not too expensive) hotel chain, I think its name is Genio.  Ask your travel agent.

And for your own safety, try to avoid my ex-wife!

  8. See Venice while you can still do it without renting scuba gear!

  9. in every part of rome you can find a piece of history. the accomadation is simple to find. hotel, beb and so on .first of all go to the information office but dont use other guide .in the cente of Rome, I mean spain square,Piazza di spagna, you'll find people from every part of the world.after you 'd go to pisa by train .keep attention for you money and passaport.at the end you'd like to go an see venice .remember venice more expensive if you hven't much money, you can go for sleeping in mestre ,it's very near to venice and more cheaper, like chioggia, another beautiful place near venice.look always at the price .Ihope you'llgo to Venice with somebody tou love.in Venice there is a very known bar ,it's called Harry's bar,it'more expensive but eveybody know it.bye
