I teach ESL to adult students and I need some inspiration & ideas. It is nearing the end of the semester and my students seem restless. To add to this, the weather is getting pretty hot and my classroom doesn't have proper air conditioning. I'd like to take my class outside tonight but I'm at a loss for what kind of games, or vocabulary builiding I can do with them. Does anyone ever do something like this? Any ideas?

  1. Depending on the level, since it's an ESL class you can take them to a café and have them order in English, talk in this language among themselves.

You can catch a movie (and you'll be all cool with the AC blasting! LOL!) but prepare before and after activities.

Once I took my students to have ice cream and we had to take the bus. They had to ask about stops and making sure they were taking the right bus. Then at the ice cream parlor, they all order themselves. It was a small class and they were new in town.

  2. If it isn't too windy, you could create a worksheet with a list of different vocabulary words.  Have them cut the words out and then sort into categories (depending on your level).  Example: colors, adjectives, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, personal pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, etc.  They could work in pairs or by themselves (my adult students dislike working with others..).  Afterwards, you could have them make sentences, using only words on the sheet or using some of the words on the sheet.  Perhaps you could give them a topic and have them start a conversation, making sure to use some of the words you provided.

  3. I would work on building descriptive sentences or phrases together. Pick one thing or area and have everyone add adjectives. Then pick an activity that would go along with that thing and have them pick adverbs. You coyuld also have them build sentences or stories out of the things you see.

Example: tree - tall, green, strong.....

                     climb - quickly, agilely....
