Question:

What to do with goldfish fry?

A few weeks ago the goldfish in my pond had babies. We got caught them and put them in one of those breeder nets, and secured it to the side of the pond. The net isn't very big, and i'm wandering if keeping them in it will stunt their growth? When they are too big for the net, I can't put them in the pond becuase then it would be way too overstocked. I have a tank I could put them in, but that would still be a squeeze. Just for now, until they are bigger (I will probaly sell them to a pet store), should I buy a cheap plastic goldfish bowl to put them in? Btw they are still very tiny.

  1. To be honest depending on how many you have they should be ok in a tank inside but remember the tank has to be established before you put them in the tank they should be ok in the net outside, more people would be interested in buying them as they are small so you could put them on ebay or in your local paper e.g. trade it  most pet stores are very wary when buying from non wholesalers so it may be difficult to sell them that way.

hope this helps and good luck

  2. Leave them in the pond and let natural selection take its course. Common goldfish need large, pond sized, overfiltered tanks if kept indoors, bowls would kill them.

Petstores will not buy the fish, they already have suppliers and common/feeder goldfish coming out their ears, most won't take homebred.

Leave the fry in the pond and leave it to survival of the fittest, the parents will eat small fry anyway. Otherwise you're going to have hundred of goldfish with nowhere to go and you'll have to cull them anyway.

  3. 1.  Goldfish and koi are egg-layers, not live-bearers.

    2.  Not all the fry will survive, nor should they.  Many will be weak, deformed, or stunted.  These should be culled out and destroyed or used as feeders.

    3.  You can offer them to friends or advertise in the paper.  You should be able to get rid of most of them this way.  You might be able to get a little money out of them, but I wouldn't count on a lot.  However, selling even a hundred of them for feeders at 10-20 cents a piece should pay for the add.

    4.  Leave them in the pond and let nature take it's course.

  4. No, you shouldn't buy a bowl, you should buy a tank or use the one you already have. Because baby fish have special needs which you can't fulfill in a cheap plastic bowl. The pet stores probably won't buy them. So if you don't know what to do with them put them back in the pond and some will survive and some won't.

  5. Buy at least a 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter. I would keep one to see how big it gets!
