  1. Unfortunately, as you appear to already know, India does not allow dual citizenship; in fact voluntarily acquiring a foreign citizenship is grounds for involuntary loss of Indian citizenship.  You actually should return your passport to the nearest Indian government representative, but they won't complain if you keep it as a souvenir.

  2. You can keep it with you. You can show it your children that you are NRI. Not Reliable Indian. No need to go to Indian Embassy, foreignor for you.

  3. the Indian passport of yours is a proof of your indian origin and its glorious culture.even though you might have become an us citizen you can still preserve it as a memento of your wonderful experiences of your homeland.there is absolutely no need to discard it .instead you can preserve it and be proud of your Indian origin

  4. keep it. i believe india allows dual citizenship. and congratulations on becoming a citizen. let me the 1st desi to say welcome my american buddy...

  5. Keep it for one good reason. After few years you will,I know for sure, look at you picture in that passport and wonder how older you look after leaving your country.

  6. it is illegal for a person to possess an Indian Passport once

he/she becomes citizen of another country. It may therefore, be noted that

on becoming citizen of any other country (including US), the holder of an

Indian passport should return the same to the nearest Indian Consular

post (Embassy/Consulate). The Indian passport will be stamped "acquired

US nationality" and returned to holder. Please send the Indian passport

with covering letter and a self addressed stamped envelope for this

    purpose.

  7. yes it belongs to the indian gov't

  8. Just because you become a US citizen doesn't mean you stop being an Indian citizen.  You just have dual citizenship.  India changed the law governing dual citizenship in 2003 and it is now perfectly legal.  Keep the passport.  It will come in handy when visiting all those countries where only having a US passport might get you treated less well.

  9. It is absolutely necessary to surrender your Indian passport to Indian Embassy after you become a US citizen. As it becomes a illegal document after you become citizen of another country and get a new passport.

  10. Just keep in your desk drawer...

  11. Check to see if you may have dual citizenship

  12. the Indian governement ask all the natives of India to return the passport if taken another nationaliy .....

do as you wish , they will not come to get it :-)

  13. India does allow dual citizenship and you can use that to have a new passport issued to you by paying the relevant fees and acquire Indian citizenship all over again while retaining your US citizenship too. Good luck.
