I'm getting an exchange student from Japan, and I have no idea what to do with her. Do japanese people like watching english movies? Do they usually want to hang around the house, or go out shopping? A general guideline would be good, thanks

  1. Give her a smattering of American life. A tour of your area and asking her what she would like to do would be helpful./

  2. Just do normal things you do with her. Things you dont think much about may be really interesting to her since she doesnt live around you. Its the same principle as a cousin visiting from another state.. Just hang out and have fun with her.

  3. Just do your normal stuff and it will be interesting to the student because that's not their normal stuff. They're in a new country so they're soaking it in. Be sure to offer things to soak in. You might think it's mundane but it's new to her. Go to some areas in your community to show what your town is like. Ask what she wants to do too. Movies might be hard because there's no subtitles for her and the dialogue might be too fast, too casual, too full of slang. At some point, you have to take her shopping as she has to return to Japan loaded with gifts for people back home as custom dictates. These can be cheap things so if somewhere is having a sale or if you have a dollar store, stop by there.

  4. Japanese LOVE shopping as their culture is very big on gift giving.

It depends on the personality off course, but we had a lot of exchange ss from Japan and most of them were great-real fun, loved fitting in with all the family things, playing silly games etc. They are helpful-wait until you see how they fold washing and she will probably love to cook. I hope you like sushi. They are generally very gentle, very polite-you should have a fabulous time-she will teach you japanese in exchange for english. The only "problem" was that they seem to think there is an endless supply of hot water and will stand under the shower until it is all gone-but if you explain things like this should be no problem.
