What to do with licese plates when you buy a new car but still have to sell your car?

ok...so I am going to buy a new car, but where I am buying it doesnt take trade ins so i have to sell my car on my own. so, do i transfer my plates to my new car, but what do i get for my old car that i am trying to sell when people come to test drive it?!

  1. In some states, the plates stay with the car, but in others the plates are the property of the owner.  It sounds like that's the case where you live.  You have a couple of options.  If you have a lot of time left on your registration, transfer the plates to your new car, and get a temporary registration for your old car.  If you don't have much time left on your reg., you can just get new plates for the new car, and take the old plates off, when you sell your old car.  


  2. If I understand this right, keep the temp tags on the new car and transfer the plates when you sell the old car.
