What to do with my music?

I am 16 I have been playing violin 13 years. I would love to be part of a band, somtimes my friend and I play music together she sings and plays guitar and I play violin and I really enjoy it. i love doing other things with violin besides classical, although I enjoy playing in orchestras too. Someday, I would love to be in a band that plays for thousands of people. It doesn't need to be a rock band but just some sort of band. I would love to play violin in this 'dream band' of mine, do you think this is possible? If so, how do I go about 'getting discovered' Should I just continue to do what i'm doing with music now (taking lessons, playing with my friend) and wait untill college to try and form a real band? (I am planning on going to a music college) I like to write my own songs, I have only written a few but, yeah, do you think I will ever be in a famous band if I keep working at it?

  1. {"It doesn't need to be a rock band but just some sort of band. I would love to play violin in this 'dream band' of mine, do you think this is possible?"}

    Yes, definitely possible. The way music is changing online means that all sorts of niche bands that normally wouldn't get played elsewhere can find an audience online. If you've read about or listen to indie music, you can see how the net has helped diversify music. After all, how many MySpace pages, for example, could you go through of pop-rock bands that all sound the same?

    {"Should I just continue to do what i'm doing with music now (taking lessons, playing with my friend) and wait untill college to try and form a real band?"}

    In your next question, you actually answer yourself:

    {"I like to write my own songs, I have only written a few but, yeah, do you think I will ever be in a famous band if I keep working at it?"}

    What I mean is that you're on the right track. The very most important thing is to write music interesting to you. Write music you think is good. Sure, take suggestions from other people, but as I said it's much easier nowadays to have a niche audience.

    If you're famous with this smaller number of people - still famous - and you're writing and playing music you like, you have what you want, right?

    So yea, for now keep writing and playing music. Write music you like and play for friends. Try to play shows, make CDs. Just get your music out there.

    Here's an article that does a better job of explaining what I mean:

    Hope it helps and good luck!

  2. This is a really tough question because there are so many different possible outcomes! But before I start let me just say, never give up!!! If you and your friend enjoy playing music together and you work well together personally I'd say that there's something there to work with but you can also have other bands going as well. If you know anybody who plays other instruments, get together with them and discuss your musical preferences and play together to see if you work with them. Also if you have your some of your own songs I suggest getting together with someone (or by yourself) and record them. Then create a Myspace or some other similar site. It's extremely helpful to promote music, as it has done with my band (check it out on www.myspace.com/aasideworld) and many others. But remember, the music industry is an amazingly competitive business so you're gonna have to keep at it and never quit. Also since you play violin I say that you should create some unique style of music. If you can do all this I'd say there's a chance for you.
