Question:

What to do with old prom dresses...

I've been cleaning my closet out and I have several formal homecoming dresses and prom dresses from when I was in high school. Most of them don't fit the best anymore and I don't really need any formal dresses anyway. I'm trying to decide what to do with them. They take up so much space in my closet, and my closet is very small so I've had to pile up clothes on chairs and other places because 1/4 of the closet is old formal gowns from high school and middle school. Some of them are still in style, others are more classic styles, others, eh, not so much. I don't want to keep them because I need the closet space, but yet I don't want to get rid of them because of the memories. What would you do?

  1. make a blanket and include a piece of your old dresses.

  2. Several things you could do.  One is if you do want to keep them buy some of those bags that you put them in and hook up to the vacuum cleaner an suck all the air out of.  It makes them nearly down to no size at all.  I have tried it and it really does work.  Making storing them down to a very small size.  That way you can keep them for a while longer.  At least until you are really ready to let them go.

Now second you could always sell them to a consignment shop for others who can not buy a new one.  Only problem there is it will be gone.  But you will make a little money that way.

Either way I hope I helped you out a bit.  Good luck in your cleaning.  I know how it can be hard deciding what to keep and what to throw away.

  3. Donate them. My area has a local radio station that takes in used prom and bridesmaid dresses all year, and right before prom time they open the doors for girls who can't afford a dress to come in and pick one up for free. Instead of holding on to a dress for the memories... why not donate it so some lucky girl somewhere can create her own?

  4. There's a bunch of charities that specialize in prom dresses. They give your old dresses to girls who can't afford them themselves. I would donate most of them but keep one or two with "special memories". Good luck!
