What to do with the fetus after a miscarriage?

My best friend had a miscarriage today. I realize that the baby has not officially been born, but are you supposed to have a funeral for the deceased fetus? If not, what happens to it? Sorry I'm such an idiot, but I can't think clearly and have no idea what to do.

Thank you so much.

  1. Did your friend go to the Dr. at all? You might want to take it in to see what caused the miscarriage.

  2. you arnt an idiot, its just no one ever thinks about that until it happens. it really depends on how far along the pregnancy was, at about four months the baby is pretty good in size and form, usually however unless the baby was quite large the funeral service may cremate the remains and give to the parent if they desire, if the baby was pretty much full term it is up to the parents whether to have a funeral or cremation. you can choose whether or not you want the remains or not after cremation. if the baby was very tiny the hospital will set up cremation of the remains, i believe they handle it a different more respectful way than say an amputated leg.

  3. You are not an idiot... you are concerned and confused, as anyone would be.

A lot depends on how far along she was. But most importantly, she needs  to be seen by a doctor today. She will likely need a D & C done to prevent any infection.

She can call the doctors office or Urgent Care to ask what to do.

If she was 5 months along, it is her decision whether to have a funeral or not, as well as cremation or burial.

I'm so sorry for her loss.
