Question:

What to except at the GYN?

I'm going to the GYN for the first time on Tuesday. Besides getting a pap test, what else is going to happen? When I set up my appointment, the receptionist was aware that it will be my first visit and my doctor usually does those who have never been before. I know it's silly but I'm a little nervous, is there anything to be anxious about?

  1. It will be embarrassing, and a little scary-but you can get through it.

They will most likely have you give a urine sample before the exam begins, which can feel pretty silly if you have not done it before.

For the exam you will be undressed and in a hospital gown.   The doctor will do a breast exam to check for lumps. Then you will put your feet into these stirrups with your butt almost over the edge of the table (this feels very silly) and the doctor will examine you outside and inside.  To do the pap they will use a speculum to kind of open you up.  This can be a little uncomfortable, but it goes really quickly.

The whole thing will be over before you know it and you will have a year before you have to do it again.

  2. i'm 15 and a few months ago i went for my first time. i went for a specific reason, because of birth control complications (for my period cramps.) i never got a breast exam, just questioning and then a exam...down there. it wasnt really that bad. i had my mom in there with me, and decided, just not to be embarrassed. the gyno is used to all this, so theres no need to be worried :) good luck!

  3. Its a little scary the first time.  I have never had a bad doctor in that field, so it would be unusual to not have an OK experience.

Some of the doctors are very nice.  It is a little embarrassing.

I always tell the nurse not to look.

The doctor should always have a nurse present before conducting the exam.  Its good you are going because believe me this will be a check-up you will continue to have throughout your life and it is important.

    You should be just fine.

  4. Usually they do a breast exam to check for lumps and then a PAP. That's it unless you've asked for more.

I was nervous my first time, too. It takes like, 5 minutes or so and can be uncomfortable, but not really painful.
