my fiancee was in a car accident and suffered from severe damage to the right temporal lobe of his brain. He had surgery about a week ago to remove the lobe. He has been in a comatose state since the accident and I was wondering if anyone has any information about what I can expect to happen next.

  1. The temporal lobes are parts of the cerebrum that are involved in speech, memory, and hearing. They lie at the sides of the brain, beneath the lateral or Sylvian fissure. Seen in profile, the human brain looks something like a boxing glove. The temporal lobes are where the thumbs would be.

The temporal lobe is involved in auditory processing and is home to the primary auditory cortex. It is also heavily involved in semantics both in speech and vision. The temporal lobe contains the hippocampus and is therefore involved in memory formation as well.

  2. I think he will become a super hero.

  3. The brain is a very complex thing so it will be very difficult to guess what effect this surgery will have on his personality and movement, until he wakes up, but even then some parts of the brain are sometimes able to take over the jobs that other parts used to do, so even if he is very poorly initially, he may make some recovery in time.
