Question:

What to expect after my puppy gets neutered?

My soon to be 6 months old Samoyed/Chow puppy is getting neutered in 3 days. I know he's not going to feel well right after his surgery, so I will let him sleep it out. I am planning to get him a pro-collar instead of an e-collar, since I read that it comes easily. What worries me is that I am getting my second knee surgery (meniscus, but could be my ACL) 3 days after his neutered surgery. I am wondering how hard long does should I keep him inside? Is it alright to take him out for walks (for potty)? Do I have to keep him from walking up/down the stairs? (I read that this could tear open the wound.) I read that I should probably keep him as calm as possible, but what happen if he was running and jumping? Would any of these movements tear off the stitches? Any advises and experiences would help. Thanks so much.

  1. It's best to get him settled at home BEFORE he's fully awake from from the anesthesia. An e-collar is only necessary if he's l*****g the wound excessively. My dog was fine without an e-collar. He'll be pretty uncomfortable during the first day because it hurts for him to sit or lie down because he'll have to apply pressure on his groin area. Anyway, just lay down lots of old newspapers and towels for extra padding and to absorb excess blood that might leak.

Bringing him out for to pee is fine, but try to keep him calm during the first day. No running up and down. He might not want to poo because you have to fast him 12 hrs prior to the operation. My dog did not poo until the second day after the surgery, but by then he was up and running already (not advisable, but my dog is the hyperactive sort). And despite all that, he didn't bust his stitches, so no worries there.

Oh, your pup's testicles will look pretty red and swollen after the surgery but the swelling will go down in a few days.

  2. Yes, he will be sore, and maybe a bit sensitive. You should take him out to pee every 1-2 hours, remember to put him on a leash, walk slowly, let him sniff around. Keep him inside for about a week. The stitches will probably not tear if they're done correctly. Also, do keep the dog calm, no unnecessary stimulation, the dog will be too sore to jump and run, again the stitches probably won't tear if he did.
