What to expect from Ernie Els at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf?
Well, what can one say about Ernie Els. The big South African has done it again. Going into the last eight holes, nobody would have imagined that at the end of the day, it will be Els holding the Claret Jug.
Let us be fair and honest, Ernie did play some magnificent golf but it was more or less a case of Adam Scott crumbling because of the pressure.
The Big Easy did put pressure on the Australian on the back nine but surely one cannot blow a five shot lead at the Open. If it had been any of the experienced pros, instead of Adam Scott, then Ernie would not have been the Open winner.
However, as it is said, “there is no match for experience.” Ernie’s experience did count, as he held his nerve in the situations where he had to make some difficult putts in order to stay in contention for the title.
Coming in to the tournament, Ernie was ranked 40 in the world but after his surprising victory at the Royal Lytham, he has jumped to the 15th spot.
It was Ernie Els second Open Championship title and a fourth major over all, winning US Open and The Open Championships twice. The victory at the Royal Lytham meant that Ernie has now earned a spot in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, a tournament he has won
twice before.
PGA Grand Slam of Golf is an invitational event played in Bermuda during the off season. It is an invitational tournament in which all four major winners are invited to play with each other. Unlike the other tournaments, it is a 36-hole event.
With one major to go, the field is almost set for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Bubba Watson, the Masters, Webb Simpson, US Open, and Ernie Els, The Open, are guaranteed a place in the Grand Slam of Golf.
A victory at the Royal Lytham means that Ernie will be one of the favourites going into the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Two of his opponents are known, however, let us look at his chances in Bermuda.
Ernie Els’ form had decreased rapidly in the least year or so. He had not played golf, for which he was known, and he hardly had a top ten finish.
Worst of all, Ernie had dropped down to the 40th in the world rankings but his performances at the US Open and now at the British Open have been really impressive.
In those two events, Ernie looked like the champion he was once, and he stands a good chance going into the Grand Slam of Golf.
Since the victory at Masters, Bubba Watson has not been the player he is. His results have been average. He has missed a few cuts and most recently, he had an over par finish at the Royal Lytham.
On the other hand, Webb Simpson, since winning the US Open, has not featured in many events. He is currently relishing the birth of his second child.
Judging by the recent performances of the three players, it seems that Ernie Els has the best chance to win the Grand Slam of Golf for the third time.
Ernie is playing excellent golf in tight and windy conditions. Moreover, with the conditions almost similar in Bermuda, Ernie Els will probably be one of the favourites going into the tournament.
