What to expect from Phil Taylor at the World Matchplay? A brief look at “The Power” of darts!
Last year the world saw Phil Taylor winning his 12th World Matchplay title in amazing fashion.
It was a sight to see the master at work, as Taylor gave a breathtaking showdown of excellence and pure magic with his darts.
This year, “The Power” had an amazing start. First, his play at the McCoy’s Premier League was worth a standing ovation. He faced a memorable defeat at the hands of Adrian Lewis in the early rounds but came out strong and won the Premier League crown.
Although he won the Premier League, the signs of his age getting a hold of him were evident. Taylor admitted the fact that his age has taken a toll and his back has been causing him trouble all along the Premier League.
“I pulled my back a couple of weeks ago and I'm hurting a little bit, I can't seem to straighten up and I'm trying everything. I'm stretching and I'm taking painkillers,” said Taylor after the tiring face-off against the Australian Simon Whitlock in the
McCoy’s Premier League.
After the Premier League triumph, “The Power” was all set to win the UK Open. He gave a few good rounds at the start but it was clear that he lacked his signature aggressiveness and charisma.
Taylor managed to reach the final of the UK Open but faced defeat at the hands of Robert Thornton. It was taken as an upset because Taylor is miles ahead of Thornton when it comes to experience and major wins.
On the other hand, Ronnie Baxter snatched the Players Championship from the hands of Taylor’s disciple Adrian Lewis.
It is a time in the world of darts where experience is taken over by passion and the pure greed for glory. This is exactly what hit Taylor and Lewis in their last tournaments.
Another fact is that both Taylor and Lewis have seen it all, there is nothing new to their record because they have literally ruled every major tournament that exists.
Ignoring the bad days, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor remains the world number one and is the best that the world has seen in darts. The World Matchplay will, without a shadow of a doubt, mark his global dominance once again.
