9th grader first year with language class. What to expect?

I have Ap classes and student council and sports.

Should I concentrate only on those this year? Cause I have a social life also.

  1. No doubt your social life is important, but so are your grades.  German isn't that hard at all but if this is your first language you may have to learn like a German.  You could end up loving the language or never wanting Bratwurst again.

The inital classes will be basic conversations.  "Guten Tag!" "Auf Wiedersehen!"  "Wie geht es Dir?" and you will be required to make small talk with your classmates.

The grammar is much harder to learn for Americans because German has four grammatical cases:  Nominative, Accusative, Dative, Genitive.  (Don't fret; many Slavic languages have five and six!)  That may baffle you to the point where you scream "Also ich verstehe nur Bahnhof!!!" but it may also teach you better English grammar.

My first foreign language was French.  I enjoyed it so much I took Spanish a few years later..
