The best thing to expect is a sore behind and sore legs.  And that is the whole truth.  No, that is so true, but lessons can be a great thing for beginners and advance riders.  The brain can learn new things everyday....the more you learn about the horse and your lessons and by working at it...the better rider you will become.  Make sure you have a good teacher....ask about their experience giving lessons.  Also  most people go group lessons and I will be honest it is cheaper..but you will not learn as much as you will not be getting one on one..if you can afford to do it go solo on lessons.  Do not get in a hurry..this takes time to get a proper seat and to learn about horses movements and the such.  Take it slow and absorb everything and read about riding and the proper seat.

Most riding schools are good for the complete beginners to horse riding, don't expect too much...it will all be explained to you and you'll learn more starting from the start.

  Just don't try and go too fast.

It varies a great deal with each instructor and school along with your riding abilities and the price you pay.  Some provide horses and tack, some don't.  If you provide your own horse, some include boarding, some don't.  Some instructors go with their students to competition.  Some train only for pleasure riding.

You should first decide what YOU want and then find a school/instructor that gives you that at a fair price.
