I recently caught a small brown cuban anole in my backyard. I was wondering what types of food I could feed it besides grasshoppers. Is there any type of people food that I can give it?

Thanks so much!

  1. They eat small insects and other things generally refered to as "creepy crawlies", but you have to feed them with live ones. This is because they are incapable of detecting non-moving things, apparently.

  2. DIET:

Anoles eat daily. They are insectivores. Their food must not be too big for them (no larger than 1/2 the size of their head. Crickets, silk worms, trevo worms, wax worms are all part of their varied diet. Many will even eat babyfood fruits and possibly the meats. They are used as treats(once or twice a wk) and are wonderful for hydration. ♥

  3. Anoles are interesting little lizards to keep, but you need to be PREPARED.  A 10 gallon tank can house a single anole, though a 20 gallon is better (and necessary if you have a pair).  They MUST HAVE a UVB-producing reptile light (fluorescent), and they must have a heat source.  The temperature in the cage should be an ambient 80 degrees on one side during the day, with a spot on one side of the tank that reaches 90 degrees F for basking.  Do not use hot rocks.

Your little wild-caught lizard harbors an interesting variety of internal parasites.  If you're planning on keeping him long term, strict attention to cage cleaning and sterilization are necessary, and he will need to be taken to a veterinarian, along with a fecal sample, so that he can be rid of the parasites which will build up to lethal levels in a tank (due to reinfection, which can't be prevented in that environment).

He'll eat a variety of live insects, which should be dusted with calcium as most feeder insects are too high in phosphorus.  Crickets, mealworms, and occasional wax worms are most easy to acquire.  Do not feed wild insects, as these can transmit more parasites.  Silk worms and phoenix worms are very nutritious and have high calcium levels, so don't need to be dusted.

Mist the tank/cage heavily twice a day, as these lizards don't drink from standing water--they will drink water from the droplets.  Some also have success putting an airstone into a small water bowl, so that it makes the water move and roil--this attracts many droplet-drinkers to drink from a dish.  Dehydration should be avoided, as it can lead to kidney failure.

Some anoles appreciate an occasional bottle cap full of fruit baby food as a treat, but this isn't a big part of their diet.

If all of the above sounds too expensive, release him where you found him before he becomes ill.  If you have other reptiles in your house, do not release him, but give him to a local reptile rescue where he can receive proper care.
