shape sorter (some kind of container with shaped holes that they can push shape blocks through)--my son and daughter both loved these at 1

bath toys --

age appropriate music instruments (my daughter loves these giraffe maracas--of course, she might just love them because they're her brothers.  :D  )

playskool pop up balls--i'm sorry I can't tell you the exact name of this toy.  but it pops up balls and the baby picks them up and puts them back on the toy which then throws the ball back up--my son and daughter loved this one.

she's really little right now and it's not like she'll even remember. i'm sure she's getting a ton of toys, so get something a little more practical, like a cute outfit or something. that way the parents have less clutter overall and more cute clothing for their little girl.

oh and if you babysit offer a free night of babysitting.

A present my daughter got for her first birthday is a Fisher Price piggy bank that comes with big plastic coins. You put them in the bank and it counts them as you put them in and sings songs. It cost around $15 at walmart. My daughter is 2 and she still loves it and plays with it about every day!
