What to know to be a vegetarian

I decided that I was going to be a vegetarian. It's not unlike me, I know it's about saving animals and whatnot, I just don't know all the details. For instance: How do I get protein.

Questions and little details like that are what I want to know, don't hesitate to bore me with the details, I want to know what I'm in for. If anyone could help me with this, Thank you in Advance, and enjoy the rest of your day/week/month/year/life, etc.

  1. Go for it. I's healthier to be vegetarian.

    Nick don't be dumb.

  2. Ok.  Sir you are NOT SAVING ANIMALS by going vegetarian.  If you choose not to eat meat that is ALREADY DEAD you are doing a disservice to the ANIMAL that DIED to feed YOU.  Don't waste the lives of killed animals.  Their food is a gift to us and should be respected, not left to rot.

  3. goveg.com has many many articles to help you with going vegetarian.

To get good protein and other things you need to be healthy, make sure you take vitamins and eat LOTS and LOTS of beans. Many things contain protein btw, just check the nutrition labels.

  4. Protein is very easy to come by when you live in a developed nation and you have more than corn and rice available.

Bread, pasta, cereal, rice, beans, peas, lentils, nuts and seeds are all great sources of protein and you don't have to eat them at the same time. You can complement protein even days later but is is best to get complete protein as often as possible if your an athlete.

Minerals such as calcium and iron are very easy to come by when you include plenty of dark green leafy vegetables such as mustard, collards and kale in your diet.

ALL vegetarians should take a b12 supplement on a regular basis since most people eat meat, dairy AND fortified cereals but still have a lower b12 profile than recommended.

Do not doubt the potential of a vegetarian diet. Many top tier athletes have been and remain vegetarian.

  5. The American Dietetic Association has said that "appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases." However, poorly planned vegan diets can be deficient in nutrients such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iodine and omega-3 fatty acids. These deficiencies have potentially serious consequences, including anemia, rickets and cretinism in children, and osteomalacia and hypothyroidism in adults.

  6. You can get protein from a lot of places...I'm vegan so i dont eat eggs, but if ur just vegetarian, then you can eat eggs. Beans, tofu, tempeh, nuts, soy, ext...they all have protein...don't over do the soy though. Try to eat fresh veggies or green (as in veggie products) as often as possible because many people forget about that and just become "carb-atarians" just eating products like bread, chips, and junk, and forget about nutrition and being healthy...just because ur a veggie dosn't automaticly make you healthy, you have to eat right and balanced to be healthy...take supplements or a one a day vitamin that contains certain things you need like b vitamins ext...ya...hope i helped!!!

  7. I have been veg for two months now.  I didn'tknow what do do fornproper nutrition when I started either.  So I just ate lots of broccoli.  Anyway...now I take a multivitamin (non gel cap without fish oil) every day which gives me my vitamin a, b, as well as iron and zinc.  If you still eat dairy and eggs, you'll be just fine.  Protein comes in all shapes and sizes.  Beans, nuts, eggs, wheat bread, and a lot off other foods contain high amounts of protein.  You can also take a supplement.  I just mix in some protein powder in my morning shake; it's the easiest way.

for omega 3 nutrients, you can eat flax seed ( I eat Flax Plus Cereal, or flax crackers) but it kind of tastes like dirt.  You can also take a flax seed vitamin.

also, just look up vegetarian nutrition on google, or get a book aboutit (they usually have good recipes too).

you've made a great and beneficial decision, and I hope I've helped you maintain your choice!
