What to look for when buying a mattress?

I'm in need of a new mattress and don't want to spend too much money.

Coil count, is what you are looking for.  The higher the better.  It prevents sagging in the mattress, and adds comfort.

Shop around a little online, you would be amazed what you can find.  Often with free delivery.

Aside from that, I am a huge fan of pillow topped mattress.  so so comfy!

Everyone is different as far as what makes a mattress comfortable.  Go to a furniture store and lie down until you find one you feel is right for you.  Don't be embarrassed about this - it's important to have a  comfortable nights sleep.

I prefer a mattress that is not too soft (makes me ache), but one that is really firm doesn't cut it either.  

If you cannot afford the one you really want you might try to get one that is fairly firm and put one of those egg crate toppers on it.   Usually the "pillow top" mattresses are a bit more expensive than those without.  The topper is an acceptable replacement for the pillow top if that is not in the budget.
