  1. There are too many factors involved to get a "pat" answer. I recommend going to a real surf shop (not a bathing suit store with some surfboards) and talk to real surfboard sales people.

In general the board has to have enough buoyancy for you to Be able to take off on a wave. At 5'3" (and I guess weight proportional), that could be a pretty tiny surfboard for an experienced surfer.

Bigger is always better for a beginner. A nice 7'2" funboard shape will get you started. I suspect that if you're truthful about your other athletic endeavors, you will be on a short board in no time. Unless of course you learn to love the 'glide' and nose riding and take to longboarding.

Once again, I really recommend you spend some time in a real surf shop. I am partial to hand shaped boards (No Popouts), but some of the new materials and technology on the market make some lower cost, high durabilty boards available to beginners. Whatever you choose, surfing is by far the greatest 'stoke' there is. I have been doing it for over forty years, so get into the water and have fun.

  2. thats a good size to start off with. I started with a 7-1 foam and then went to a 5-8 board. Now im on a 6-0 and shred the heck out of the wave
