  1. Try cooked rolls first, and then maybe one raw if you feel up to it. Most people don't want to jump straight in.

Try a California, spider roll, and perhaps a spicy tuna or yam yam. Green tea goes great with it.

When you go to order, the waiter will give you a regular menu and an ordering menu which is just a slip of paper with the different rolls and you mark how many rolls you want (Rolls, not pieces! My uncle made that mistake his first time.) of whatever kinds.

Also ask for any specials. You should always try the specials, or whatever the chef recommends. Always worth it. =)

  2. It depends on your budget and what you want.  Rolls are what most Americans think of, inner layer fish, then rice, then "seaweed".  Then there are hand rolls.  All the same ingredients, but in a funnel shape and less expensive.  Then there is just fish on rice, and lastly fish alone.

If this is your first time, go for California rolls or Philadelphia rolls.  Sweet shrimp is always good for a beginner.

  3. If you have never had sushi, I would err on the side of caution and order California Roll.  If you don't mind raw fish, then I would order spicy maguro roll (spicy red tuna roll), spider roll is good too.

  4. If you are ordering sushi for a meal, as opposed to just an app., I suggest 2-3 rolls for a full meal. Order 3 basics your first time - tuna, salmon, and californa. Each roll has 6 pieces. Yummy.

  5. California and Alaska rolls. Those are the best!!!
