  1. Deodorant, headache medicine, any other medicine you need, and lots of money.  Seriously.  You can't get headache medicine or any medicine in convenience stores and last thing you want is to hunt down a pharmacy and face a language barrier while your head is pounding.  Because of our diet, westerners generally do smell more than Japanese, and the choices of deodorants are limited.

If you have big feet or you are tall, that can make buying pants and shoes much more difficult, but not impossible.  But I assume you won't need those things in 3 months.  I don't want to be crude, but if you are male, you might find western condoms to be more to your liking.

Otherwise, cash is your friend.  Try to pack light, and get anything later as you need it with your Yen.

I also suggest a roller type suitcase over a backpack.  Japan usually involves lots of walking,  Why carry that weight on your back?

If you plan to be moving around a lot, don't plan on walking around temples with a loaded down back pack.  That is crazy.  You'll have to leave it somewhere.

Of course, there is the obvious: Basic language book and travel guide.

  2. Bring a pair of chopsticks.

    :)

I can't give you a serious answer... I've never been to Japan.

    HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Try not to worry about bringing things like IPods or magazines, just enjoy everything around you.

  3. MONEY, MONEY, MORE MONEY and a credit card

In december you will have snow so maybe you can buy winter clothes here (I hope you are not so tall or big because all japanese clothes are small). You can buy rubber boots but check your size before coming.

There are lockers in some trains stations but I see that your guitar might be a bulky thing. Somebody cand lend you one here?.

About clothes you can wash them at the coin laundry and if you run out of t-shirts and some underwear or socks you can buy it for the cheap on 100 en stores (they are not fashionable but it helps).

About the medicine just pay attention to the answer above me. He is truly right.

Buy here a suitcase dont bring one.
