What to put on w-4 exemptions?????

i am 21 years old in the NAVY and im married with no children, i am wondering what to put on my w-4 to get the most back on my paychecks and not have to pay back at the end of the year, im currently put down for 1 but I really need help here.... thanks

  1. If your spouse doesn't work, then you could claim married/2 allowances on your W-4 and be OK.  If your spouse works, you should each claim no more than one allowance, and it would be wise to file as "married, but withhold at higher single rate" until you see how it works out at the end of the year.

    You are married, so you are NOT head of household, so don't add one allowance for that.


  2. 1 for yourself 1 for each dependent 1 for head of household

    Shortcut:  If you do not have additional deductions (mortgage interest, real estate taxes):

    1. Spouse does not work, married 2

    2.  Spouse does work - you need to know what she claims on her W-4.  If the higher salary puts married 2, the lower salary should claim only 0-1 exemptions.

    If you do have additional deductions (mortgage, etc.), use the calculator.
